Commercial Construction Estimator - Intern

Perry Building Contractors (PBC) is looking for an Estimating Intern in the Commercial Construction Industry to begin the Summer of 2024.

Job Summary

The Intern’s primary function would be to assist with preparing portions of contract proposal estimates using applicable project plans and specifications performing quantity takeoffs, material lists, labor costs and equipment needs/costs. They should be able to provide technical assistance in negotiating contracts, change orders, etc., assist corporate and project management in determining what projects to bid, and reviewing all final estimates to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to formal quotations.

Estimator Intern Job Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:


  1. Cost Estimation: Analyze architectural plans, engineering drawings, and project specifications to accurately estimate the overall cost of commercial construction projects. This includes evaluating the quantities and costs of materials, labor hours required, equipment needed, and other direct and indirect expenses.
  2. Bid Preparation: Prepare detailed and competitive bids for construction projects, considering the project's scope, complexity, and timeline. Collaborate with the project management team to ensure that all aspects of the bid are well-defined and aligned with the client's requirements.
  3. Supplier and Subcontractor Management: Request and evaluate quotes from suppliers and subcontractors to obtain the best pricing for materials and services. Help to grown and maintain a network of reliable vendors to ensure competitive pricing and quality supplies.
  4. Cost Optimization: Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising the quality and safety standards of the project. Suggest alternative materials or construction methods that may lead to cost efficiencies.
  5. Project Documentation: Keep accurate records of all estimates, bids, and communication related to each project. Maintain a database of historical cost data to aid in future estimating tasks and improve accuracy.
  6. Market Research: Stay up to date with the latest industry trends, market conditions, and pricing fluctuations to ensure the company's estimates remain competitive and profitable.
  7. Collaboration: Work closely with the project management team, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and clarify any discrepancies in the construction plans.
  8. Risk Assessment: Evaluate potential risks and uncertainties that could affect project costs and timelines. Advise the management team on risk mitigation strategies.
  9. Compliance: Ensure all estimates and bids adhere to relevant building codes, safety regulations, and industry standards.

Estimator Inter Qualifications and Skills:

  1. Experience with construction estimating or similar function, ideally in the commercial construction sector
  2. Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and building codes
  3. Proficiency in using construction estimating software and tools
  4. Excellent mathematical and analytical skills
  5. Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy
  6. Effective communication and negotiation skills to interact with clients, vendors, and subcontractors
  7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  8. Time management skills to handle multiple projects and deadlines
  9. Bilingual in English/Spanish (preferred)
  10. Working as a commercial construction estimator requires a combination of technical knowledge, analytical skills, and effective communication to ensure successful project outcomes and satisfied clients.
